College-aged students who are currently enrolled in a Bachelors or Masters degree program, who are interested in the profession of Fire Protection Engineering.

PRESENTATION:

A fire sprinkler head fails for no apparent reason and right away the assumption is that the head must have been defective. Insurance companies and experts become involved and opinions begin to fly! Most often other mitigating circumstances contributed to the fire sprinkler head failure, i.e. wrong application, wrong temperature rating, damaged at installation. This presentation is intended to show the attendees some of the common fire sprinkler failure modes and a few not so common failure modes.

SPEAKER:

Charles B. Sullivan

Mr. Sullivan is an expert in the design, installation, inspection, testing, maintenance, repair, and operation of fire suppression systems and their component; and often addresses industry standard of care issues. Previously, he worked in the fire protection industry for 22 years. His responsibilities ranged from designing and installing fire sprinkler, fire alarm, and kitchen hood suppression systems to managing a group of field service and installation suppression and alarm technicians. He has spent the last 8 years working on the forensic side of the industry. His 30 years of trouble-shooting gives him unique expertise in code analysis, standard of care, construction defect, and cost estimating as they relate to installation and repair of systems. Mr. Sullivan has provided expert deposition and trial testimony in numerous states and is a Senior Consultant with AEI Corporation.
