Presentation: ICC Provisions for Tall Wood Buildings

The use of timber in tall buildings is receiving increased attention by designers and developers because it is considered a “green” building material with positive effect on the carbon footprint in building construction. For that reason, the design and construction of tall timber buildings has generated increased attention in the fire protection community, including work in the U.S. by the NFPA Research Foundation and the ICC Ad Hoc Committee on Tall Wood Buildings.

The ICC ad hoc committee started working in 2016 with a goal of developing detailed requirements for the 2021 edition of the International Codes. The ICC work also includes a series of full-scale fire tests upon which the code requirements will be based. Other various studies exist and are being used in the above projects.

The presentation will address the wide range of topics affected by the proposal and studied by the ICC Ad Hoc Committee, including a summary of the fire tests and proposed code language. Mr Baldassarra is an Ad Hoc Committee committee member.

PRESENTER: Carl F. Baldassarra, P.E., FSFPE (Wiss, Janney, Elstner Associates, Inc.)
