Abstract:
In recent years, several proposals have been put forth to the International Code Council (ICC) that would result in the removal of elevator lobbies and fire/smoke dampers in buildings up to 420 ft in height. The ICC Code Technology committee’s sub-committee on elevator lobbies is sponsoring technical analysis that thus far has supported these proposals in principal, while other groups stand in opposition to these changes. Thus far the groups in opposition have prevailed, as the code changes have failed to pass, but these changes are back on the table for consideration for inclusion in the 2018 IBC.
A technical talk will be presented discussing whether elevator lobbies and fire/smoke dampers are needed and evaluating the technical arguments that have thus far been presented. The impact of stack effect and design issues pertaining to stair and elevator pressurization systems will be discussed.
